✅ S Shaped Turns

Great job on breaking your turns into 3 stages. Nice Ss. Let's work on the carving.

😳 That Awkward Feeling

Having tried ankle rolling, you've teased out the sensation of the outside edge of your up-hill ski cutting into the snow. This currently feels awkward to do because it requires a full body compound movement, more on this below.

📐 Ski Motion

Engage edges from both skis and let them cut into the snow: Your skis will simultaneously move in 3 ways when initiating a carve. They change directions (which you've mastered), their edge angles increase, and the inter-ski separation increases.

🧍‍♀️ How to Bend

To get your skis to do this, you must "get shorter" and bring your inside knee closer to the chest. This doesn't mean to lift the ski off the snow, rather it means to slightly lean into the turn. Remember, the inside leg still needs to be weight-bearing throughout the turn. The key is to bend at the hip, knees, and ankles.

🏠 Practice at Home

Try to simulate this motion at home. As shown in the video, use a hand to brace against something while leaning in that direction. Of course, there won't be anything to brace against when on-snow. But this is fine because the centrifugal force from your speed & turning motion will act as the brace and keep you from flopping to the side.

🔵 Apply on Snow

When applying this on snow, choose an intermediate slope to make it easier. Try to picture the body motion you've practiced off-snow and the 3 ways your skis move throughout the turn (as shown in the video).

Notes:

📊 3 stage turn

Break your turns into 3 distinct stages to turn Zs into Ss: first half, straight down the hill (flat base, no edge), second half.

🔪 Cut into the snow

Instead of sliding your skis over the snow when turning, engage your edge and let them cut into the snow, AKA carve.

⬇️ Initiate from down low

Initiate your turn from the lowest point of your body rather than using your hips / swinging your upper body. Do this by “rolling your ankle”.

👢 Roll that ankle

Roll your ankle to initiate turns. This means to push your ankle against the sidewall of your boot. This force is then transferred to your skis causing them to tilt and letting your edges dig in. Of course, you’ll need to use your whole leg, just make sure you let the ankles “lead” the motion.

🎈 Gradual precise pressure

You want to gradually increase edge pressure & angle when initiating turns. This smooth and precise transition to max edge angle will help you get those Ss. Remember the balloon analogy. Practice and internalize this feeling off-snow.
